"All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention." 1 Kings 18:29
We are now at the climax of the showdown on Mount Carmel between the prophets of Baal and Elijah! Elijah laid out very fair rules for this contest between Baal and the Lord our God. The rules were as follows: both parties would receive a bull to cut and place on the wood, but they could not light a fire to it. Instead, they were to call on the name of their god, and Elijah would call on the name of the Lord. The God who answers with fire—He is God. Be reminded that there were 450 prophets of Baal and only one Elijah. The prophets of Baal began their rituals, going to the extreme of cutting themselves in hopes that their god would show up. But guess what? There was no sound, no one answered, and no one paid attention. Now it was Elijah's turn. He made it even more difficult for his sacrifice to catch fire by pouring water over it! We know scientifically that anything drenched in water will not burn. However, we also know that NOTHING is too hard for our God. When Elijah called on the Lord, not only did God consume the bull and the wood, but His fire also licked up all 12 gallons of water that surrounded it!   I want to encourage you with a few things today. The situation that has been causing you to worry—lay it on the altar. Although it seems daunting, or you feel outnumbered by your problems, remember that there are more with you than against you. The mighty God of Heaven backs you, and NOTHING is too hard for Him! He hears your prayers and will respond in the way that is perfect for your situation. When He does respond, expect Him to do far more than you ever imagined. And when He has done it, don’t forget to lift His name in praise. With your testimony, you have the opportunity to make believers out of unbelievers! |
